Daniel A. Weigand, PhD
Dan
was born in Portland, OR, and spent his youth in Orange, CA, where he was actively involved in a variety of sports including
basketball, American football, baseball, volleyball, tennis, racquetball, surfing, SCUBA diving, and motor racing. He obtained Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Portland State University and Master of Science
and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Experimental Psychology with a Specialization in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise
from the University of North Texas.
He has an extensive background in academia and consulting including serving
as the director of sport and exercise research and consulting centers in the United Kingdom (UK). Recently, he was an associate
director in the Center for Research Support at Walden University where he was responsible for overseeing research quality
and dissemination.
While living in the UK, Dan was the Chair of the Psychology Section of the British Association
of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), the liaison between BASES and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP),
and one of two BASES representatives on the General Assembly of the European Federation of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC).
Dan was an AASP Certified Consultant and while living in England
he was a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist: Psychology (Research and Support) and a British Psychological Society
Chartered Psychologist. He is a Fellow of AASP and was a Fellow of the European College of Sport Science. He also was a member
of the U.S. Olympic Committee's Sport Psychology Registry and a member of the British Olympic Association's Psychology Advisory
Group.
He has conducted numerous presentations, workshops, and individual/team consultations on mental skills
training in sport and exercise to novice and elite athletes from more than 20 sports (including national champions, Olympians,
and professionals) in the USA and UK.
He also has reviewed scientific manuscripts for many journals and was the
editor of the Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences, a behavioral/social science section editor for
the European Journal of Sport Science, an editorial board member of the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical
Fitness, and an essociate editor for Athletic Insight and the Journal of Sport Behavior. He is currently the
editor of the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology.
Dan has many publications in scientific journals
and his research is primarily in the following areas: (a) motivational climate and the development of achievement motivation
in physical education, sport, and exercise; (b) mental skills training effectiveness in physical education, sport, and exercise;
and (c) the psychology of injury rehabilitation in sport and exercise.
He has published a book with Vicki Aitken
entitled "Caddy-Talk: The Psychology of Being a Great Golf Caddy" (see link below to purchase).
The book is a required text for Caddie Connect, the caddie school in St. Andrews, Scotland, and is included in the Professional
Caddies Association's training program. He also has two unpublished books (available soon from DAWVIJA Publishers): "Golf
Zone: How to Play Better and Enjoy it More" and its complement "The Golf Zone Logbook: Exercises to Get into the
Zone."
